Speech and language problems
Language disorders affect understanding and producing language, for example after a stroke (aphasia) or in children with delayed language development. Speech disorders affect pronunciation, fluency as in stuttering, or the voice. The specialists for this are speech and language therapists.

When to see a doctor

- Sudden speech problems, a drooping face or weakness in one arm: call 144 at once

What you can do yourself
Talk and read a lot
Children learn language through conversation. Reading aloud and naming things build vocabulary.
Let people finish
With stuttering, listen calmly, do not interrupt or speak for the person.
Rest your voice
Drink plenty, do not shout or whisper, avoid smoke.
