What EMR, ASCA and co. mean for your health insurance
Switzerland distinguishes between basic and supplementary insurance. A therapist's recognition decides who pays.
Basic insurance (KVG/LAMal)
Compulsory for everyone. Pays for treatment by recognised health professions such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy or psychological psychotherapy with a doctor's referral, minus deductible and co-payment.
Supplementary insurance (VVG/LCA)
Optional. Depending on your policy it covers part of the cost of complementary medicine, usually only with therapists listed in the EMR, with ASCA or in another register your insurer accepts.
- Federal diploma
Federally recognised training
Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychological psychotherapy and others. With a doctor's referral or prescription.
Pays: Basic insurance
- EMR
Register of Experiential Medicine (EMR)
Quality label for complementary therapists. Training and continuing education are checked every year.
Pays: Supplementary insurance, usually 50–80%
- ASCA
Swiss Foundation for Complementary Medicine
The second large register. Some insurers accept only EMR, some only ASCA, many both.
Pays: Supplementary insurance
- EGK
EGK therapist register
EGK health insurer's own register. Relevant if you have supplementary insurance with EGK.
Pays: EGK supplementary insurance
- Not checked
Not yet checked
The practice lists a registration our team has not confirmed yet. Until then it is marked “Not checked”.
Pays: Ask your insurer, quoting the register number
Whether and how much your insurer pays is set out in your policy. If in doubt, ask before the first session and give the therapist's register number.
