When to see a doctor straight away

If your back pain comes with any of these:

  • fever without a previous infection
  • numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms or legs
  • problems passing urine or stool
  • unintended weight loss
  • pain after an accident

Emergency: 144

What you can do yourself

  • Keep moving

Carry on with daily life as normally as possible. It speeds up recovery.

  • Avoid bed rest

Lying down for long periods does not help and can be harmful.

  • Get checked after 4 to 6 weeks

If the pain persists, see a doctor.
