Chiropractic

Chiropractic deals with problems of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. Chiropractors make a diagnosis and treat with their hands, for example with targeted thrusts to joints, mobilisation and exercises. In Switzerland, chiropractic is a university-trained medical profession.

Origin and approach

Chiropractic began in the United States in the late 19th century. Modern chiropractic is based on medical diagnosis and combines hands-on treatment with exercise and advice. The aim is to relieve pain and improve mobility.

What a session is like

Length: 15–30 min
  1. At the first appointment, your symptoms and medical history are discussed in detail.
  2. This is followed by a physical and neurological examination, and an X-ray if needed.
  3. Depending on the findings, treatment includes targeted thrusts, mobilisation, soft-tissue techniques or exercises.
  4. You are given tips on movement and posture in everyday life.

Chiropractic: what is it used for?

  • Back pain: there are positive studies, especially for acute and longer-lasting back pain without a clear cause.
  • Neck pain, for which there are also some positive studies.
  • Headaches that come from the neck; here the evidence is limited and mixed.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

  • Partly supported

    Back pain

About as effective as other recommended treatments, such as exercise therapy.

  • Limited evidence

    Neck pain

Manipulation and mobilisation work about as well as other treatments. The studies are weak; serious side effects are rare.

Good to know

  • The first appointment usually takes longer and follow-ups are often short; typically there are a few sessions over a few weeks.
  • You can go directly without a doctor’s referral; basic insurance pays, minus your deductible and co-payment.
  • Brief pain or stiffness after treatment is possible; serious complications after manipulation of the neck are very rare but known, so ask about gentler alternatives if you are concerned.
  • If you have paralysis, numbness in the genital area, bladder or bowel problems, or fever with back pain, see a doctor or go to A&E straight away.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Chiropractors study chiropractic medicine at university (master’s degree) and then complete several years of postgraduate training. Chiropractic is a medical profession under the Medical Professions Act (MedBG). Basic insurance (KVG) pays for treatment even without a doctor’s prescription.
