What a midwife does

Midwifery is an independent, recognised health profession. Midwives work closely with the woman and her family, at their practice or in your home, and involve the gynaecologist or paediatrician when needed.

How the care works

Length of a visit: 45–60 min
  1. You get in touch, ideally early in pregnancy, and discuss what kind of support you would like.
  2. During pregnancy, check-ups and advice take place at the practice or in your home.
  3. After the birth, the midwife visits you at home in the postnatal period and looks after you and your baby.
  4. She continues to advise you on breastfeeding and recovery, also in classes.

When to see a midwife

  • Support and check-ups during pregnancy.
  • Antenatal preparation, on your own or in a class with your partner.
  • Postnatal care at home for mother and baby.
  • Breastfeeding advice and questions about feeding your baby.
  • Postnatal recovery after the birth.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Midwives study at a university of applied sciences (Bachelor of Science in Midwifery) or hold a recognised diploma. The profession is regulated by the Health Professions Act; a cantonal licence is needed to work independently. Therascout checks the proof of qualification before a midwife appears in the search.
