Trying to conceive
If pregnancy does not occur despite regular unprotected sex for over a year, this is called difficulty conceiving (infertility). The causes can lie with either partner, so both should be assessed. The burden is often heavy, including emotionally.

When to see a doctor straight away
Get medical help at once if:
- A positive test with one-sided lower abdominal pain or bleeding (possible ectopic pregnancy)
- During hormone treatment: a rapidly swelling abdomen, abdominal pain or breathlessness

What you can do yourself
Use fertile days
Regular sex every 2 to 3 days increases the chances.
Live healthily
No smoking, little alcohol, a healthy weight. Folic acid before pregnancy.
Get checked early
See a gynaecologist after a year without pregnancy. Women aged 35 or over sooner.
Your first point of contact: the midwife
She supports pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period and knows which treatment fits now.
Midwives provide support from pregnancy onwards.

- Psychotherapy
- Basic insurance on a doctor's referral: 15 sessions, then another 15. Beyond 30 sessions the insurer must approve.
- Acupuncture
- Basic insurance if a doctor with the relevant certificate treats you. Otherwise supplementary insurance, if the therapist is recognised.
- Medical treatment
- Basic insurance pays for assessment, hormone treatment and up to three inseminations per pregnancy. IVF is paid privately.
