Nutrition counselling

In nutrition counselling you work with a professional to find a way of eating that suits your health and your daily life. It is not about strict diets but about changes you can manage. Dietitians take into account your health conditions, habits and preferences.

Origin and approach

Nutrition counselling is based on nutrition science and current recommendations. Instead of general rules, you develop a plan together that fits your situation. The aim is for you to manage your own diet in the long term.

What a session is like

Length: 30–60 min
  1. The first meeting covers your health, your goals and your current eating habits.
  2. You will often keep a food diary for a few days before or after.
  3. Together you agree on realistic goals and concrete steps.
  4. At follow-up appointments you discuss how it is going and adjust the plan.

Nutrition counselling: what is it used for?

  • Weight management: nutrition counselling is among the measures recommended in clinical guidelines.
  • Irritable bowel, where a guided change of diet is among the recommended treatments.
  • Other digestive complaints, where there are some positive studies.
  • Food allergies and intolerances, to eat a balanced diet despite restrictions.
  • Tiredness or skin problems, although the benefit of nutrition counselling here is not well established.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

  • Established

    Joint pain

For people who are overweight, guidelines recommend weight loss. It takes load off the joints and eases knee pain.

  • Established

    Weight management

Recommended in guidelines as part of a programme with exercise and behaviour change. Combined, the elements work better than alone.

  • Partly supported

    Irritable bowel

A low-FODMAP diet eases symptoms for many people. It should be supervised and time-limited.

Good to know

  • Usually there are three to six sessions over a few months; the first meeting usually takes longer.
  • Basic insurance pays for certain conditions with a doctor’s prescription; otherwise you pay yourself or supplementary insurance may contribute.
  • If you have unintended weight loss, blood in your stool or persistent diarrhoea, please see a doctor first.
  • Have suspected coeliac disease or an allergy tested before cutting out foods, as otherwise the test may give a false result.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Dietitians complete a bachelor’s degree (BSc) in nutrition and dietetics at a university of applied sciences. The profession is regulated under the Health Professions Act (GesBG), and independent practice requires a cantonal licence. Only recognised professionals can bill basic insurance (KVG), with a doctor’s prescription.
