Exercise therapy

Exercise therapy is targeted, supervised training: endurance, strength and flexibility, matched to your complaints and what you can manage. The aim is to become more active step by step and to stay that way.

Origin and approach

Exercise therapy is offered in physiotherapy practices (for example as medical training therapy), in clinics and in group programmes. Regular exercise acts on body and mind; how much depends on the complaint.

What a session is like

Length: 30–60 min
  1. You start by assessing complaints, goals and what you can manage.
  2. You train under supervision, alone or in a group, and increase the load slowly.
  3. You get a programme for home so that exercise becomes part of daily life.

Exercise therapy: what is it used for?

  • Chronic pain: exercise programmes improve pain and function somewhat.
  • Low mood: exercise eases depressive symptoms; the studies are often small.
  • Cancer-related fatigue and period pain; there are positive studies here.

In ME/CFS, graded exercise programmes are no longer recommended.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

  • Partly supported

    Chronic pain

Exercise programmes can improve pain and function somewhat. The effects are small to moderate and vary between studies. Harm is unlikely.

  • Partly supported

    Exhaustion and fatigue

In cancer-related fatigue, aerobic exercise reduces tiredness. In ME/CFS, graded exercise programmes are no longer recommended.

  • Partly supported

    Low mood and depression

Exercise eases depressive symptoms, according to Cochrane about as well as psychotherapy. However, the studies are often small.

  • Partly supported

    Menstrual complaints

Regular exercise, including yoga, can clearly reduce period pain. The evidence is of low quality.

Good to know

  • With a doctor's referral, exercise therapy can be billed to basic insurance as physiotherapy; classes without a referral are usually self-paid.
  • With heart disease, severe pain or marked exhaustion, check with your doctor first how much exercise is right for you.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Exercise therapy is led by physiotherapists, sports scientists and movement therapists with a federal diploma. With a doctor's referral basic insurance pays, otherwise supplementary insurance sometimes does.
