Yoga therapy

Yoga therapy uses yoga postures, breathing exercises and relaxation, adapted to your personal situation. Unlike a yoga class, the focus is not on one sequence for everyone but on your concern. You usually work one to one or in small groups.

Origin and approach

Yoga comes from India and has a very long tradition. Yoga therapy developed in the 20th century, notably through T. Krishnamacharya and his son T. K. V. Desikachar. The idea is that a programme of movement, breath and rest tailored to you strengthens body and mind.

What a session is like

Length: 60–75 min
  1. You start by going through your symptoms, your mobility and your goals.
  2. The therapist puts together suitable exercises and shows you them step by step.
  3. You practise postures, breathing techniques and relaxation, as far as your body allows.
  4. You are given a short programme to practise regularly at home.

Yoga therapy: what is it used for?

  • There are some positive studies for long-lasting lower back pain.
  • There are also some positive studies on managing stress.
  • People use yoga therapy alongside other care for anxiety and sleep problems; the research here is limited.
  • Some people try it for chronic pain or menopause symptoms, again with limited research.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Some evidence
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Traditional use
used, but hardly studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • Often 5 to 10 one-to-one sessions, after which many people continue practising on their own.
  • Tell the therapist if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure, glaucoma or an injury – some postures will then be adapted.
  • If pain is new or severe, see a doctor first; yoga therapy does not replace medical treatment.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Yoga therapy is a method within complementary therapy with Federal Diploma (OdA KT); the training usually builds on several years of yoga teacher training. Supplementary insurers usually require registration with EMR or ASCA before contributing.
