Pilates

Pilates is a whole-body workout with calm, controlled exercises on a mat or on equipment. It focuses on the deep trunk muscles, conscious breathing and good posture.

Origin and approach

The method goes back to Joseph Pilates, who developed it in the early 20th century. Today it is offered in fitness classes and as clinical Pilates in physiotherapy practices.

What a session is like

Length: 45–60 min
  1. A session begins with breathing and warm-up exercises.
  2. You practise slow sequences that strengthen the trunk, back and pelvis.
  3. The teacher corrects your posture and technique and adapts exercises to your complaints.

Pilates: what is it used for?

  • Back pain and posture: more effective than no or minimal treatment, but not better than other exercise programmes.
  • Strength, flexibility and body awareness in daily life.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • With back problems, small groups or one-to-one sessions with a therapeutically trained teacher are a good choice.
  • After surgery, in pregnancy or with severe pain, talk to your doctor first.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Pilates teachers train in private courses; clinical Pilates is often offered by physiotherapists. Some supplementary insurers contribute to classes, usually with EMR or ASCA registration.
