Feldenkrais method

The Feldenkrais method is learning through movement. With slow, attentive movements you discover how to move more easily and with less effort. There are group classes (Awareness Through Movement) and one-to-one sessions (Functional Integration).

Origin and approach

The method was developed by the physicist and judo teacher Moshé Feldenkrais (1904–1984). The idea is that many movement habits are learned and can therefore be relearned. It is not about training or stretching, but about awareness and new options.

What a session is like

Length: 45–60 min
  1. You wear comfortable clothing and lie, sit or stand, usually on a mat or a low table.
  2. In a group, the therapist talks you through small, slow sequences of movement.
  3. In a one-to-one session, the therapist gently guides your movements with their hands.
  4. You pay attention to what feels easy and avoid pain and strain.
  5. At the end, you notice what has changed, for example when standing or walking.

Feldenkrais method: what is it used for?

  • People often come for posture problems and a wish to move more freely.
  • Feldenkrais is used alongside other care for back pain; the research on this is still limited.
  • Some people use the method as part of managing chronic pain, again with limited research.
  • Many also value the calm lessons as a way to switch off when stressed.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • Group courses often run over several weeks; one-to-one sessions typically number about 5 to 10, depending on your concern.
  • The movements are gentle and suitable for all ages, including people with limited mobility.
  • Have any new, severe or unexplained pain checked by a doctor first; Feldenkrais does not replace medical treatment.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Training takes around four years part-time and follows international standards. Feldenkrais is also a method within complementary therapy with Federal Diploma (OdA KT); supplementary insurance usually requires registration with EMR or ASCA before it contributes.
