Eurythmy therapy

Eurythmy therapy is a movement therapy from anthroposophic medicine. Using your arms, legs and whole body, you practise specific movements linked to the sounds of speech and to musical elements. The exercises are tailored to your situation and usually repeated at home too.

Origin and approach

Eurythmy therapy was founded in 1921 by Rudolf Steiner together with the physician Ita Wegman. In the anthroposophic view, the movements act on mental and physical life processes; this view of the human being has not been shown scientifically. There are some observational studies with positive results but hardly any controlled studies.

What a session is like

Length: 30–45 min
  1. The first conversation covers your complaints and life situation; therapy is often recommended by an anthroposophic doctor.
  2. Wearing comfortable clothes and soft shoes, the therapist shows you movements that you copy and repeat.
  3. After the exercises, you rest briefly.
  4. You are given exercises to repeat daily at home.

Eurythmy therapy: what is it used for?

  • Exhaustion and fatigue.
  • Stress and inner restlessness.
  • Concentration problems, including in children.
  • Alongside other care for chronic illness.

For these uses eurythmy therapy relies mainly on tradition and experience.

Good to know

  • Usually a series of 7 to 12 sessions is planned, often weekly; no previous experience is needed.
  • Have new or severe symptoms checked by a doctor first; eurythmy therapy does not replace medical treatment.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Eurythmy therapists complete several years of eurythmy training followed by additional training in eurythmy therapy. Eurythmy therapy is one of the methods with which therapists can obtain the federal diploma as a complementary therapist (OdA KT). Basic insurance does not pay for it; supplementary insurers contribute depending on the policy, usually only with EMR or ASCA registration.
