Breathing therapy

Breathing therapy works with your own breath. You learn to notice your breathing and to let it come and go without controlling it. Touch, movement and voice exercises are also part of it.

Origin and approach

In Switzerland the most widespread approach is Ilse Middendorf’s “Perceptible Breath” (1910–2009). The idea is that breathing reflects tension and emotions, and that freer breathing contributes to more calm and well-being.

What a session is like

Length: 50–60 min
  1. You start with a conversation about what brings you to breathing therapy.
  2. For the hands-on part you lie clothed on a table; the therapist accompanies your breathing with touch, gentle pressure and stretches.
  3. During the exercises you sit, stand or move and notice where your breath finds room.
  4. At the end you talk about what you noticed and simple exercises for everyday life.

Breathing therapy: what is it used for?

  • People often come because of stress and inner restlessness.
  • Some people look for additional support in dealing with anxiety.
  • For breathing problems, such as shallow or tense breathing, it is used alongside medical treatment.
  • Some people use breathing therapy to relax when they have trouble sleeping.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Some evidence
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Traditional use
used, but hardly studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • Often 8 to 12 sessions, usually weekly or fortnightly; the research on its effects is still limited.
  • Breathlessness, a lasting cough or chest tightness should be checked by a doctor first; do not stop prescribed medication on your own.
  • If you have epilepsy, heart disease or a mental health condition, or are pregnant, talk to your doctor first, especially before intensive breathing techniques.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Breathing therapy is a method within complementary therapy with Federal Diploma (OdA KT); training takes several years part-time. Supplementary insurance usually requires registration with EMR or ASCA before it contributes.
