Pulmonary rehabilitation

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a programme of exercise training, education and advice for people with chronic lung disease such as COPD. You learn to cope with breathlessness and gradually build up your exercise capacity.

Origin and approach

The programmes are prescribed by lung specialists and run by teams of physiotherapists, nurses, dietitians and psychologists, as outpatient or inpatient care. Guidelines include them in the standard treatment of COPD.

What a session is like

Length: 60–90 min
  1. At the start, lung function and exercise capacity are measured, for example with a walking test.
  2. Several times a week you train endurance and strength under supervision.
  3. In education sessions you learn breathing techniques, how to use inhalers properly and what to do if things get worse.

Pulmonary rehabilitation: what is it used for?

  • Breathlessness in COPD: the programme improves quality of life and exercise capacity; the effect is well established.
  • Other chronic lung diseases and recovery after a hospital stay for a lung problem.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.
