Posture problems

A rounded back at the screen or drooping shoulders are very common. Contrary to popular belief there is no single correct posture, and studies show no clear link between posture and back pain. More important than "sitting up straight" is changing position often and staying strong.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if you notice:

  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms or legs
  • A visibly curved spine or uneven shoulders in children and teenagers
  • In older age, an increasingly bent back or loss of height
  • Back pain that gets worse at night or at rest

In an emergency: 144

What you can do yourself

  • Change position often

The best posture is the next one. Alternate between standing, sitting and walking.

  • Set up your workspace

Screen roughly at eye level, feet flat on the floor, forearms supported.

  • Stay strong

Regular activity and exercises for the trunk, back and shoulders.

Which therapies are used for posture problems?

Sorted by the state of research on posture-related back and neck problems. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

    Physiotherapy

Strengthening exercises ease neck and back pain. Whether they change posture permanently has hardly been studied.

    Pilates

For back pain more effective than no or minimal treatment, but not better than other exercise programmes.

  • Limited evidenceSuppl. ins.

    Feldenkrais method

Few, mostly small studies. Some signs of better balance in older people; the evidence for pain is unclear.

Therapists may offer several methods, so they can be counted more than once.
