Jaw problems

Pain in the jaw joint or chewing muscles, clicking or a limited mouth opening are grouped as temporomandibular disorders (TMD). They are often linked to teeth grinding or tension and usually get better on their own within weeks to months.

Therascout does not diagnose. Have new, severe or persistent complaints checked by a doctor.

Your dentist is usually the first point of contact. They check your teeth and can fit a bite splint if needed.

When to see a doctor straight away

If any of these comes on top of your symptoms:

  • You cannot eat or drink
  • Your jaw is locked and you cannot open or close your mouth
  • Swelling in the face or fever
  • Jaw pain with chest pressure, breathlessness or pain in the left arm: call 144 at once, possible heart attack

In an emergency: 144

What you can do yourself

  • Rest your jaw

Soft food, no chewing gum, avoid wide yawning and chewing nails or pens.

  • Heat or cold

A warm or cool cloth on the cheek eases muscle pain.

  • Lips together, teeth apart

During the day, make sure you do not clench your teeth.

Which therapies are used for jaw problems?

Sorted by the state of research on temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

    Physiotherapy

Jaw exercises and manual therapy may help. However, the studies are of low quality and uncertainty is high.

    Psychotherapy (CBT)

Cognitive behavioural therapy may reduce pain in the long term. The evidence is weak.

Therapists may offer several methods, so they can be counted more than once.
