Rehabilitation after surgery

After surgery, for example on the knee, hip, shoulder or back, targeted aftercare helps you regain strength, mobility and independence. How long it takes depends on the operation. Your care team sets the plan.

Therascout does not diagnose. Have new, severe or persistent complaints checked by a doctor.

Follow your surgical team’s instructions, e.g. how much weight you may put on the joint.

When to see a doctor straight away

If any of these comes on top of your symptoms:

  • A painful, swollen or warm calf (possible thrombosis)
  • Breathlessness or chest pain: call 144 at once
  • Fever, or the wound is red, warm or oozing
  • Rapidly increasing pain or a joint that suddenly cannot take weight

In an emergency: 144

What you can do yourself

  • Practise daily

Do the exercises from therapy regularly at home.

  • Move early

Get moving as early and as much as your care team recommends.

  • Treat the pain

Take pain relief as prescribed so that movement and exercises are possible.

Which therapies are used for rehabilitation after surgery?

Sorted by the state of research on aftercare following joint replacement. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

    Physiotherapy

A standard part of aftercare, e.g. after joint replacement. After knee replacement it improves function in the short term; long-term benefits are less clear.
