Mindfulness training (MBSR)

Mindfulness training teaches you to pay attention to the present moment, deliberately and without judgement. The best-known programme is MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction), an eight-week course. For people who have had depression before, there is a related programme called MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy).

Origin and approach

The American molecular biologist Jon Kabat-Zinn developed MBSR in 1979 at a university hospital in Massachusetts. He adapted meditation practices from Buddhist traditions into a secular programme. The idea is that by noticing thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations mindfully, you learn to deal with pressure more calmly.

What a session is like

Length: 120–150 min
  1. An MBSR course usually consists of eight weekly group meetings and one day of practice.
  2. You practise sitting meditation, the body scan and gentle movements from yoga.
  3. You share your experiences with the group.
  4. Between meetings you practise at home for about 30 to 45 minutes a day, often with audio guides.

Mindfulness training (MBSR): what is it used for?

  • There are several positive studies on MBSR for coping with stress.
  • MBCT was developed to help prevent relapse after depression; there are several positive studies on this too.
  • There are also some positive studies for anxiety.
  • People also use mindfulness for chronic pain, sleep problems or burnout; the research here is limited.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

Good to know

  • Mindfulness needs regular practice; what you get from it depends a lot on your own practice.
  • During acute severe depression or psychosis, or shortly after a trauma, intensive meditation can be distressing – talk to your doctor or psychotherapist first.
  • Mindfulness training does not replace treatment for depression; if you have suicidal thoughts, Die Dargebotene Hand is available around the clock on 143.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

MBSR and MBCT courses are led by certified teachers who have completed several years of training to international standards. Some supplementary insurers contribute to course fees; check with your insurer beforehand.
