Hypnotherapy

In hypnotherapy you are guided with words into a state of deep relaxation and focused attention known as trance. You stay awake, hear everything and remain in control. In this state you work on your concern using imagination and inner images.

Origin and approach

Hypnosis has been used therapeutically since the 19th century; modern hypnotherapy was strongly shaped by the American psychiatrist Milton Erickson (1901–1980). The idea is that in trance you are more open to new perspectives and can influence habits, sensations and feelings more easily.

What a session is like

Length: 50–90 min
  1. In a first conversation you discuss your concern, your health and any questions about hypnosis.
  2. You sit or lie comfortably while the therapist guides you into trance with a calm voice.
  3. In trance you work with images, ideas and suggestions that you agreed on together beforehand.
  4. You are then brought back out of trance and talk about what you experienced.
  5. You often learn self-hypnosis so you can keep practising at home.

Hypnotherapy: what is it used for?

  • For irritable bowel syndrome there are some positive studies on gut-directed hypnotherapy.
  • People often come to quit smoking; the study results on this are mixed.
  • Hypnosis is also used alongside other care for anxiety; the research here is limited.
  • Some people use it for chronic pain or sleep problems, again with limited research.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Some evidence
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Traditional use
used, but hardly studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • A few sessions are often enough; programmes for irritable bowel syndrome usually involve 6 to 12 sessions.
  • Have bowel symptoms checked by a doctor first before assuming they are irritable bowel syndrome.
  • If you have psychosis, another serious mental health condition or epilepsy, talk to your doctor first.
  • Hypnosis does not replace medical or psychotherapeutic treatment; if you have suicidal thoughts, Die Dargebotene Hand is available around the clock on 143.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

The title hypnotherapist is not protected in Switzerland; look for solid training and membership of a recognised professional association. Doctors and psychotherapists also use hypnosis – as part of medical treatment or psychotherapy prescribed by a doctor, basic insurance may cover the cost. Otherwise some supplementary insurers contribute, usually only if the therapist is registered with EMR or ASCA.
