Coaching

Coaching supports people who want to clarify a work or personal question, make a decision or reach a goal. Through conversation you develop your own solutions and next steps. Coaching is not therapy and not a treatment for mental illness.

Origin and approach

Coaching originally comes from sport and spread into the working world from the 1980s. It draws on approaches from psychology and counselling. The idea is that you are the expert on your own life, and coaching helps you sort out your situation and find ways forward.

What a session is like

Length: 60–90 min
  1. In the first conversation you clarify your concern, your goals and how you will work together.
  2. Sessions use targeted questions, conversation techniques and sometimes exercises or visualisations.
  3. Between sessions you put the agreed steps into practice in everyday life.
  4. At the end you look back together at what has changed.

Coaching: what is it used for?

  • People often come to cope better with stress and heavy workloads.
  • Coaching is used during times of change and life crises, for example when reorienting your career.
  • After burnout, some people look for support in returning to work, alongside medical treatment.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

Some evidence
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Traditional use

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • Coaching is not a treatment for mental illness; if you have depression, severe exhaustion or anxiety, see a doctor or psychotherapist.
  • In an acute crisis or if you have suicidal thoughts, Die Dargebotene Hand is available around the clock on 143.
  • Often 3 to 8 sessions are enough; research on coaching for health-related strain is limited.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

The title coach is not protected in Switzerland; look for recognised training and membership of a professional association such as bso or ICF. Coaching is usually paid privately, though employers sometimes contribute.
