Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback in which brain waves (EEG) are measured and fed back on a screen. The aim is to learn to change certain patterns of brain activity, for example to improve attention.

Origin and approach

Neurofeedback has been used since the 1970s, mainly for ADHD. Whether it has a specific effect is disputed: when assessors did not know who had been treated, studies showed no clear effect.

What a session is like

Length: 30–60 min
  1. Electrodes are placed on the scalp with a little gel; they only measure and do not deliver any current.
  2. You follow a game or film that responds to your brain activity.
  3. A course of training usually involves 20 to 40 sessions.

Neurofeedback: what is it used for?

  • ADHD and concentration problems; the evidence is limited.
  • Sleep problems, migraine and stress; there are only a few studies.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • In ADHD, neurofeedback does not replace guideline treatment; discuss it with your doctor or paediatrician.
  • The many sessions make training demanding; ask about the total cost beforehand.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Neurofeedback is offered by psychologists, doctors and therapists with further training; there is no protected title. Supplementary insurers sometimes contribute if the therapist is recognised.
