Couples therapy

In couples therapy both partners work on their relationship together with a professional: on conflicts, communication or the question of how to go on. It is not about who is right but about understanding each other better.

Origin and approach

There are different approaches, such as behavioural, systemic or emotionally focused couples therapy. Compared with no treatment, couples therapy clearly improves relationship satisfaction, for many couples but not all.

What a session is like

Length: 60–90 min
  1. In the first session both partners describe their view and what they hope for from therapy.
  2. In the following sessions you practise listening to each other, handling conflicts differently and voicing your needs.
  3. Between sessions you try out agreements in daily life.

Couples therapy: what is it used for?

  • Relationship problems: couples therapy clearly improves relationship satisfaction, for many couples but not all.
  • Crises such as infidelity, a separation or the time after a child is born.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.
