Bereavement support

Bereavement support helps people after the death of someone close: in one-to-one conversations, grief groups or grief cafés. It makes room for feelings and helps to rebuild daily life without the person who died.

Origin and approach

Grief is a normal response to loss and takes time. Many people find support helpful; in normal grief, however, studies showed no clear additional benefit. With persistent, very distressing grief, psychotherapy is more likely to help.

What a session is like

Length: 50–60 min
  1. In the conversation you talk about the person who died and how you are now.
  2. The supporter listens and offers guidance on grief reactions and practical questions.
  3. In grief groups you share with people who have been through something similar.

Bereavement support: what is it used for?

  • Grief after the death of someone close: many find support helpful; in normal grief an additional benefit is not clearly shown.
  • Farewell and loss in other situations, for example after a miscarriage.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.
