Stress management training

Stress management training is a group or one-to-one programme in which you learn to recognise stress early and handle it better. It combines elements of behavioural therapy, relaxation and mindfulness with practical strategies for work and daily life.

Origin and approach

The programmes are based on the psychological model of stress: stress arises when demands exceed your own resources. In studies, programmes with elements of cognitive behavioural therapy had the strongest effect on work stress.

What a session is like

Length: 60–120 min
  1. You look at what stresses you and how you have reacted so far.
  2. You practise new strategies: solving problems, setting priorities, checking stressful thoughts, planning breaks.
  3. Relaxation exercises are added, which you use in daily life between sessions.

Stress management training: what is it used for?

  • Work stress: programmes with elements of cognitive behavioural therapy were the most effective in studies.
  • Burnout: the programmes slightly reduce symptoms; changes at the workplace were often more effective in studies.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.
