When to see a doctor straight away

If any of these comes on top of your symptoms:

  • A sudden, extremely severe headache, the worst you have ever had
  • Paralysis, numbness, problems speaking or seeing, or confusion
  • Fever with a stiff neck or a rash
  • Headache after a blow to the head
  • Aged 50 or over: new pain at the temple, pain when chewing or vision problems

In an emergency: 144

What you can do yourself

  • Regular routine

Get enough sleep, eat regularly and drink enough.

  • Headache diary

Note the days, intensity and possible triggers. This also helps with medical assessment.

  • Use painkillers sparingly

Take them on no more than 10 days a month. More frequent use can itself cause headaches.

Sorted by the state of research on tension-type headache. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied
