Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a sound in the ear such as ringing, hissing or buzzing that only you can hear. It is common and often linked to hearing loss. For many people it becomes less bothersome over time. What matters is how much it distresses you, and that can be worked on.

Therascout does not diagnose. Have new, severe or persistent complaints checked by a doctor.

The first point of contact is an ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor, who checks your hearing and possible causes.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor at once or promptly if:

  • Sudden hearing loss: get checked the same day
  • Ear noise after a head injury
  • With dizziness, paralysis, speech or vision problems: call 144 at once
  • A pulsing sound in time with your heartbeat

In an emergency: 144

What you can do yourself

  • Avoid silence

Quiet background sounds, such as music or nature sounds, provide distraction.

  • Relax

Stress increases awareness of tinnitus. Relaxation and good sleep help.

  • Protect your hearing

Avoid loud music and noise or wear ear protection.

Which therapies are used for tinnitus?

Sorted by the state of research on chronic tinnitus. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Therapists may offer several methods, so they can be counted more than once.
