Fascia therapy

Fascia is the connective tissue that wraps and connects muscles, organs and bones. In fascia therapy, this tissue is treated with slow, often firm strokes, with stretches or with tools. The term covers a range of different methods.

Origin and approach

Fascia therapy is based on the idea that stuck or hardened fascia can contribute to pain and restricted movement. Pressure and stretching are meant to make the tissue more supple again. Fascia research is young, and many of its assumptions are not yet confirmed.

What a session is like

Length: 45–60 min
  1. First you discuss your complaints; your posture and mobility are often looked at.
  2. Treatment uses slow, deep pressure with the hands, elbows or tools.
  3. The pressure can be intense; say if it is too strong for you.
  4. You often get exercises to do at home, for example with a foam roller.

Fascia therapy: what is it used for?

  • Back pain: there are some studies, but the results are mixed.
  • Muscle tension and stiffness: many people feel a loosening; there is little evidence for this.
  • Chronic pain: the method is sometimes used as a complement; there is little research.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Some evidence
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Traditional use
used, but hardly studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • A few sessions one to two weeks apart are often planned, combined with exercises.
  • Afterwards you may feel sore, as after exercise, or have bruises.
  • Care is needed if you take blood thinners or have osteoporosis, thrombosis, inflammation or a fresh injury; discuss this beforehand.
  • Have severe, new or radiating pain checked by a doctor first.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Fascia therapy is not a protected title; it is offered by physiotherapists, massage therapists and complementary therapists with different kinds of further training. Whether supplementary insurance pays depends on the training and on registration with EMR or ASCA; ask beforehand.
