Thai massage

Thai massage is a traditional bodywork treatment from Thailand. It combines pressure with the hands, elbows and feet with passive stretches reminiscent of yoga. It takes place in comfortable clothing on a mat on the floor.

Origin and approach

Thai massage (nuad thai) has been passed down for centuries in temples and families and has been on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2019. It is based on the idea of energy lines (sen) running through the body. These lines cannot be shown scientifically, but many people find the stretches loosening.

What a session is like

Length: 60–120 min
  1. First you go over what you would like and any health limitations.
  2. You lie on a mat in loose clothing; usually no oil is used.
  3. Treatment combines rhythmic pressure along the energy lines with stretches in different positions.
  4. Say straight away if a stretch or the pressure hurts.

Thai massage: what is it used for?

  • Muscle tension and stiffness: there are a few small studies, but they tell us little.
  • Back pain: some people feel relief; solid evidence is lacking.
  • Stress: many people value the treatment for relaxation; this use is based on tradition and experience.

Good to know

  • Many people come when they need it or at regular intervals, for example every few weeks.
  • Because of the strong stretches, care is needed with osteoporosis, joint replacements, disc problems, after surgery and during pregnancy; mention these beforehand.
  • Thai massage does not replace medical treatment; have severe or new pain checked by a doctor first.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

There is no state-regulated training for Thai massage; training in Switzerland and in Thailand varies widely. It is usually paid privately; some supplementary insurers contribute if the therapist is registered with EMR or ASCA for this method.
