Art therapy

In art therapy you paint, draw or make things, for example with clay or collage. It is not about beautiful pictures or talent, but about expressing feelings and thoughts that are sometimes hard to put into words. You then look at what you have made together with the therapist.

Origin and approach

Art therapy developed from the mid-20th century in psychiatry and psychology. The idea is that creative work opens a different route to inner experience and can support you in sorting through what weighs on you and finding new perspectives.

What a session is like

Length: 50–60 min
  1. You start by talking about how you are and what you would like to work on.
  2. You create freely or around a theme the therapist suggests.
  3. Afterwards you look at the work together and talk about what it brings up for you.
  4. Sessions are one to one or in groups, including in clinics and rehabilitation centres.

Art therapy: what is it used for?

  • People come during life crises and grief to express what they have been through.
  • Art therapy is used alongside other care for low mood and anxiety.
  • After distressing or traumatic experiences, it is sometimes used alongside psychotherapy.
  • It is often chosen when talking about feelings is difficult.

Good to know

  • You do not need any artistic experience.
  • Often 10 to 20 sessions, sometimes more depending on your concern; the research on its effects is still limited.
  • If you have severe depression, have experienced trauma or have suicidal thoughts, contact a doctor or psychotherapist first – in an acute crisis, call Die Dargebotene Hand on 143.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

The protected qualification is Art Therapist with Federal Diploma (OdA ARTECURA), here with a specialisation in visual art and painting. Supplementary insurers usually only contribute to the cost if the therapist is registered with EMR or ASCA.
