Dance and movement therapy

In dance and movement therapy you express yourself through movement. You move freely or with guidance, alone or in a group – no dance experience is needed. Movement and conversation are used to become more aware of your feelings and your body.

Origin and approach

Dance therapy emerged in the USA in the 1940s, notably through the dancer Marian Chace. The idea is that body and mind influence each other, and that movement can express feelings that are hard to put into words.

What a session is like

Length: 50–60 min
  1. You begin with a short warm-up to settle into the room and into your body.
  2. The therapist suggests movement themes or picks up on movements that come from you.
  3. Music may accompany the movement, but it does not have to.
  4. At the end you talk about what you noticed.

Dance and movement therapy: what is it used for?

  • It is used alongside other care for low mood, to get moving again and reconnect with others.
  • People also come to cope better with stress and tension.
  • After distressing or traumatic experiences, it is sometimes used alongside psychotherapy.

  • Often 10 to 20 sessions, one to one or in groups; the research is still limited.
  • If you have severe depression, have experienced trauma or have suicidal thoughts, contact a doctor or psychotherapist first – in an acute crisis, call Die Dargebotene Hand on 143.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

The protected qualification is Art Therapist with Federal Diploma (OdA ARTECURA) specialising in movement and dance therapy. Supplementary insurers usually only contribute to the cost if the therapist is registered with EMR or ASCA.
