Music therapy

In music therapy, music is used with a purpose: you play simple instruments, sing, improvise or listen to music. No musical experience is needed. The focus is on expressing feelings and on the relationship with the therapist.

Origin and approach

Music has always been used to influence mood. Music therapy developed as a therapy in its own right after the Second World War and is now also used in clinics. The idea is that music reaches feelings directly and can make expression and contact possible where words are difficult.

What a session is like

Length: 45–60 min
  1. You talk about your concern and how you are feeling at the moment.
  2. You improvise alone or together with the therapist, for example on drums, xylophone or piano.
  3. Sometimes you listen to music, sing or work with your voice.
  4. Afterwards you talk about what you experienced.

Music therapy: what is it used for?

  • Music therapy is used alongside other care for low mood and depression.
  • People also come because of anxiety and inner tension.
  • Many use it to cope better with stress.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established

Some evidence
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Traditional use
used, but hardly studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • You do not need to play an instrument or be able to sing.
  • Often 10 to 20 sessions; the research is limited, and music therapy has been studied most as an add-on for depression.
  • If you have severe depression or suicidal thoughts, contact a doctor or psychotherapist first – in an acute crisis, call Die Dargebotene Hand on 143.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Music therapists usually complete several years of study or postgraduate training, for example at a university of applied sciences. A recognised qualification is Art Therapist with Federal Diploma (OdA ARTECURA) specialising in music therapy; supplementary insurers usually require registration with EMR or ASCA.
