Fango (mud) therapy

In fango therapy, warm mineral mud (fango) or a similar material is applied to the body as a pack, usually on the back, neck or joints. The pack releases its heat slowly and evenly. Today, mixtures of fango and paraffin are often used.

Origin and approach

Fango is the Italian word for mud; the treatment comes from the spa tradition, for example the thermal resorts around Abano in Italy. The idea is that heat loosens tense muscles, improves blood flow and prepares for massage or physiotherapy. For heat treatments in back pain there are signs of short-term relief; there are only a few studies on fango therapy itself.

What a session is like

Length: 20–30 min
  1. First, the therapist checks whether heat is suitable for you.
  2. The warm pack is applied and you are covered up.
  3. You rest for 20 to 30 minutes while the heat takes effect.
  4. A massage or physiotherapy often follows.

  • Back pain.
  • Muscle tension.
  • Joint pain from osteoarthritis, when the joint is not inflamed.

Good to know

  • Not suitable with acute inflammation, recent injuries, fever, varicose veins in the treated area and some heart and circulation conditions.
  • With reduced skin sensation, for example with diabetes, there is a risk of burns; say straight away if it gets too hot.
  • Fango is usually part of a series of 6 to 12 treatments, together with massage or physiotherapy.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Fango therapy is part of the training of physiotherapists and medical massage therapists with a federal certificate. As part of physiotherapy prescribed by a doctor, basic insurance covers it; with medical massage therapists, supplementary insurance contributes depending on the policy, usually only with EMR or ASCA registration.
