Ozone therapy

Ozone therapy uses a mixture of medical oxygen and a small proportion of ozone. Often a small amount of your blood is taken, mixed with the gas and returned; in other forms the gas is injected into joints, muscles or near the spine. The treatment belongs in a doctor’s hands.

Origin and approach

Ozone has been used in medicine since the early 20th century, for example for disinfection. The idea is that in small doses ozone provides a mild stimulus to which the body responds with protective and repair processes. Some studies on knee osteoarthritis and spinal disc problems report pain relief, but they are mostly small and of limited quality; for many other advertised uses there is no evidence.

What a session is like

Length: 30–60 min
  1. The doctor checks your complaints, previous illnesses and medication and informs you about benefits and risks.
  2. Depending on the form, blood is taken, mixed with the gas and returned through a drip, or the gas is injected at a specific site.
  3. You then stay briefly to be monitored; usually a series of treatments is planned.

Ozone therapy: what is it used for?

  • Joint pain from knee osteoarthritis; the evidence is limited.
  • Back pain from spinal disc problems; here too the evidence is limited.
  • For many advertised uses, such as infections, cancer or anti-ageing, there is no evidence.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Partly supported
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Hardly studied
used, but hardly or not studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

  • Limited evidence

    Joint pain

Ozone injections into the knee worked about as well as other joint injections at first in a few studies, but worse after some months.

Good to know

  • Rare but serious risks include gas embolism, infections and circulatory reactions; injecting ozone gas directly into a vein is considered dangerous, and breathing in ozone damages the lungs.
  • Not suitable with an overactive thyroid, G6PD enzyme deficiency (favism), clotting disorders or during pregnancy.
  • Get a written cost estimate beforehand and be wary of offers that promise a cure.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

In Switzerland, ozone therapy is carried out by doctors, usually after further training with a private professional society; there is no federal or FMH qualification for it. Basic insurance does not pay for it; whether supplementary insurance covers anything depends on your policy.
