Colon hydrotherapy

In colon hydrotherapy, the large intestine is rinsed with warm water. Through a thin tube in the anus, water flows in through a closed system and out again together with loosened bowel contents, often accompanied by a gentle abdominal massage. It is a development of the traditional enema.

Origin and approach

The idea comes from the 19th and early 20th century belief that substances build up in the bowel and poison the body. This assumption is considered disproved: the bowel cleans itself. There is no reliable evidence that colon cleansing detoxifies or improves health in general.

What a session is like

Length: 45–60 min
  1. First, the therapist checks your complaints, previous illnesses and possible reasons not to do it.
  2. You lie on your back, a thin single-use tube is inserted, and water flows in and out for 30 to 45 minutes.
  3. Your abdomen is often gently massaged meanwhile; afterwards you go to the toilet and rest briefly.

Colon hydrotherapy: what is it used for?

  • Constipation and bloating.
  • Alongside fasting or a change in diet.

For these uses the method is based on tradition; reliable studies on its benefit are lacking.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

We do not have a rating by complaint for this method yet.

Good to know

  • Cramps, nausea and disturbances of the body’s salt and water balance are possible, and very rarely injury to the bowel wall; make sure single-use materials and good hygiene are used.
  • Not suitable with inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, acute haemorrhoids, after bowel surgery, with heart or kidney failure or during pregnancy.
  • Blood in your stool, a lasting change in bowel habits or unintended weight loss should be checked by a doctor first.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Colon hydrotherapy is learned in private training and is offered by naturopaths, therapists and some doctors. Basic insurance does not pay for it; some supplementary insurers contribute, usually only with EMR or ASCA registration for this method.
