Cupping

In cupping, the therapist places glass or silicone cups on the skin, and heat or a pump creates suction inside them. The skin is drawn up, and reddish to purple marks usually appear. In dry cupping the skin stays intact, in wet cupping it is first lightly scratched, and in cupping massage the cups glide over oiled skin.

Origin and approach

Cupping is very old and known in many cultures, in Europe as well as in China and the Arab world. In Traditional European Medicine it is one of the draining methods; the idea was to stimulate blood flow and draw out harmful substances. Some smaller studies show relief of neck and back pain, but their quality is limited.

What a session is like

Length: 30–45 min
  1. First, you talk about your complaints and medication; your back is often checked by touch for hardened areas.
  2. You usually lie on your front, and the cups are left in place for a few minutes or, in cupping massage, moved over the skin.
  3. Afterwards, you rest briefly and keep the treated areas warm.

Cupping: what is it used for?

  • Neck and back pain; there are smaller studies of limited strength on this.
  • Muscle tension.
  • In naturopathy also for general stimulation; this use is based on tradition.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Some evidence
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Traditional use
used, but hardly studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • The marks are harmless and usually fade after 3 to 10 days; often 3 to 6 sessions are planned.
  • Cupping is unsuitable or only partly suitable with blood thinners, clotting disorders, skin conditions at the site and during pregnancy.
  • Wet cupping must use sterile single-use materials; ask if in doubt.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Cupping is part of the training for the federal diploma as a naturopath in Traditional European Medicine (OdA AM) and is also taught in shorter courses. Basic insurance does not pay for it; supplementary insurers contribute depending on the policy, usually only with EMR or ASCA registration. Cantonal rules apply to methods that break the skin.
