Kinesiology

Kinesiology is a method built around a simple muscle test. The therapist checks how a muscle responds to light pressure and reads this as a sign of strain or imbalance. Based on this, they suggest touch, exercises or conversation intended to restore balance.

Origin and approach

Kinesiology goes back to the American chiropractor George Goodheart, who developed the muscle test in the 1960s. Today there are many branches, such as Touch for Health or Educational Kinesiology (Brain Gym). The underlying idea is that body, emotions and energy are linked and show up in muscle tension.

What a session is like

Length: 60–90 min
  1. You start by talking about your concern and what you would like to change.
  2. You lie or sit fully clothed while the therapist carries out muscle tests with light pressure on your arm or leg.
  3. Depending on the result, this is followed by touching certain points, movement or breathing exercises, or conversation.
  4. You are often given simple exercises to do at home.

Kinesiology: what is it used for?

  • People often come because of stress and a wish for more inner calm.
  • Some people try kinesiology for learning and concentration difficulties, in children and adults alike.
  • Some people ask about kinesiology for allergies, but no benefit has been shown.

Good to know

  • There is very little scientific evidence for kinesiology and the muscle test; the method rests mainly on tradition and experience.
  • A muscle test is no substitute for a medical assessment – it is best to have allergies and intolerances tested by a doctor.
  • Many people come for 3 to 6 sessions, often a few weeks apart.
  • Kinesiology does not replace medical or psychotherapeutic treatment; if symptoms persist, see a doctor first.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Kinesiology is a recognised method of complementary therapy: therapists can obtain the qualification of Complementary Therapist with Federal Diploma (OdA KT). For supplementary insurance to contribute to the cost, registration with EMR or ASCA is usually required.
