Kneipp therapy

Kneipp therapy is an overall naturopathic concept with five pillars: water treatments, medicinal plants, exercise, nutrition and a balanced lifestyle. It is best known for cold affusions, water treading and arm baths. After instruction, many treatments can be done yourself at home.

Origin and approach

The Bavarian priest Sebastian Kneipp developed the method in the 19th century in Bad Wörishofen. The idea is that regular, mild stimuli strengthen the body’s self-regulation and defences. There are only a few, mostly small, studies, for example on sleep, wellbeing in older people and menopause symptoms; they give indications but no firm evidence.

What a session is like

Length: 30–60 min
  1. The conversation covers your health, your complaints and your daily life.
  2. Together you choose suitable treatments, for example a knee affusion, water treading or an arm bath.
  3. The therapist shows you the treatments and does them with you.
  4. Finally, you get a plan for home, often with tips on exercise, diet and taking breaks.

Kneipp therapy: what is it used for?

  • Frequent colds and wanting to strengthen your defences.
  • Sleep problems.
  • Stress, exhaustion and fatigue.
  • Cold feet and sluggish circulation.

For these uses Kneipp therapy relies mainly on tradition and experience.

Good to know

  • Cold treatments only on a warm body: skip them if you feel cold or have a fever or acute infection.
  • With heart and circulation problems, poor circulation or very cold, white fingers in the cold, check with a doctor first which treatments are suitable.
  • Results need regular practice over several weeks; Kneipp therapy does not replace medical treatment.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Kneipp treatments are part of the training for the federal diploma as a naturopath in Traditional European Medicine (OdA AM); Kneipp associations also offer courses and training. Basic insurance does not pay for them; supplementary insurers contribute depending on the policy, usually only with EMR or ASCA registration.
