Neural therapy

In neural therapy, a doctor injects a local anaesthetic, usually procaine or lidocaine, at specific sites: into the skin, into painful points in muscles, into scars or near nerves. In Switzerland it is carried out by doctors, as it involves injections.

Origin and approach

Neural therapy goes back to the German doctors Ferdinand and Walter Huneke, who developed it from the 1920s. It has two approaches: treatment in the area of the complaint, and so-called interference field therapy, which assumes that something like a scar can cause complaints elsewhere in the body. Local anaesthesia for pain is established in medicine; for the interference field model and many uses of neural therapy there are hardly any good studies.

What a session is like

Length: 20–40 min
  1. The doctor asks in detail about your complaints, past operations, scars, dental treatment and medication.
  2. After an examination, the anaesthetic is injected at several sites with a fine needle.
  3. You then stay briefly in the practice to be monitored.
  4. Until the next session, you notice how your complaints change.

Neural therapy: what is it used for?

  • Chronic pain.
  • Back pain.
  • Headaches; this use is based mainly on experience.
  • Complaints around scars.

For these uses the evidence is limited.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Some evidence
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Traditional use
used, but hardly studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • Often 3 to 6 sessions are planned, usually a week apart.
  • Bruising, dizziness and, rarely, infection or an allergic reaction to the anaesthetic are possible; say if you take blood thinners.
  • Neural therapy does not replace finding out what is causing your complaints.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Only doctors may carry out neural therapy; they can obtain the medical certificate in neural therapy (SANTH). Whether basic insurance covers the treatment depends on how it is billed; check beforehand with the practice and your health insurer.
