Polarity

Polarity is a bodywork therapy that combines gentle touch with conversation, movement exercises and suggestions about diet. It sees a person as a unity of body, emotions and energy. The touch ranges from light holding to deeper pressure.

Origin and approach

Polarity was developed in the mid-20th century by the Austrian-American osteopath and chiropractor Randolph Stone (1890–1981). He combined ideas from Ayurveda, osteopathy and other healing traditions. At its core is the idea of a flow of energy that touch is meant to bring back into balance.

What a session is like

Length: 60–90 min
  1. You begin by talking about how you are and what is on your mind.
  2. You lie clothed on a table while the therapist holds different areas with their hands or applies gentle pressure.
  3. During the treatment you can notice and talk about what you feel.
  4. Sometimes you are given simple movement exercises or dietary suggestions to take home.

Polarity: what is it used for?

  • People often come because of stress and a wish to relax.
  • Many experience the calm touch as a break from everyday life.
  • Some people use Polarity to become more aware of their body and emotions.

Good to know

  • There are hardly any scientific studies on Polarity; the method rests on tradition and experience.
  • Many people come for 4 to 8 sessions, often one to three weeks apart.
  • Polarity does not replace medical or psychotherapeutic treatment; if symptoms are severe or persistent, see a doctor first.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Polarity is a method within complementary therapy with Federal Diploma (OdA KT); training takes several years part-time. Supplementary insurance usually requires registration with EMR or ASCA before it contributes.
