Psychological counselling

Psychological counselling supports you through difficult times in life, for example with stress, conflict or change. Through conversation you clarify your situation and look for solutions and your own strengths. It is aimed at people without a serious mental health condition and is not psychotherapy.

Origin and approach

Counselling is usually shorter and more focused on a specific question than psychotherapy. It builds on your strengths and uses methods from various psychological approaches. The focus is on regaining clarity and room to act.

What a session is like

Length: 50–60 min
  1. In the first meeting you describe your concern and what you hope to get from counselling.
  2. Together you agree on a specific goal.
  3. In the sessions you look at your situation from new angles and work out next steps.
  4. At the end you review whether the goal has been reached or whether other support would be helpful.

Psychological counselling: what is it used for?

  • Stress and overload at work or in your private life.
  • Life crises and changes such as separation, job loss or grief.
  • Relationship problems and conflicts with a partner or family.
  • Early signs of exhaustion or burnout, as support alongside a medical check-up.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Some evidence
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Traditional use
used, but hardly studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • A few sessions are often enough, for example three to ten.
  • If you feel persistently low, have strong anxiety or can no longer manage daily life, a medical assessment or psychotherapy is the right step.
  • In an acute crisis or if you have suicidal thoughts, call 144 (emergency) or 143 (Die Dargebotene Hand / La Main Tendue) straight away.
  • You usually pay the costs yourself; some supplementary insurance plans contribute, so check beforehand.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

In Switzerland, psychological counselling is not a protected professional title, and training varies widely. The title “psychologist”, however, is protected and requires a university degree in psychology (PsyG). Ask about training and professional association; basic insurance generally does not pay for counselling.
