Traditional European Medicine (TEM)

Traditional European Medicine (TEM) is the healing tradition that developed in Europe over many centuries. It works mainly with medicinal plants, diet and lifestyle, as well as external applications such as wraps, cupping or water treatments. It is one of the four disciplines of the Swiss federal diploma for naturopaths.

Origin and approach

TEM goes back to ancient physicians such as Hippocrates and Galen and was carried on by figures including Hildegard of Bingen and Paracelsus. At its core is the theory of the four humours and of constitutions, in which health is a balance of these humours. This model comes from a pre-scientific era and does not match modern medicine.

What a session is like

Length: 45–90 min
  1. In the first consultation, the therapist asks in detail about your complaints, medical history and lifestyle.
  2. They then assess your constitution, for example from your build, skin, pulse and tongue.
  3. Treatment may include herbal blends, dietary advice and applications such as cupping, wraps or baths.
  4. At follow-up appointments you review how you are doing and the plan is adjusted.

Traditional European Medicine (TEM): what is it used for?

  • Digestive complaints such as bloating or feeling overfull.
  • Frequent infections, such as regular colds.
  • Exhaustion and fatigue.

For these uses TEM relies mainly on tradition; reliable studies are largely lacking.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Some evidence
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Traditional use
used, but hardly studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • Several appointments over a few weeks are usually needed; the first consultation often lasts 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Medicinal plants can interact with medication: get preparations from controlled sources and tell your doctor what you are taking.
  • Cupping can leave temporary round bruises; if you take blood thinners, mention it beforehand.
  • New or severe symptoms, and symptoms during pregnancy or in children, should be checked by a doctor first; TEM does not replace medical treatment.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

TEM is one discipline of the federal diploma for naturopaths; depending on the canton, a licence to practise is also required. Basic insurance does not pay for TEM treatment; many supplementary insurance policies contribute, usually only with EMR or ASCA registration.
