Homeopathy

Homeopathy uses highly diluted substances, usually as small pills (globules) or drops. Classical homeopathy chooses a single remedy after a long consultation, meant to match your complaints and you as a person. Large systematic reviews have not found effects beyond placebo.

Origin and approach

Homeopathy was founded around 1800 by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann. Its principle is ‘treat like with like’: a substance that causes certain symptoms in a healthy person is meant, when highly diluted, to relieve similar complaints in someone who is ill. Many remedies are so diluted that none of the original substance can be detected.

What a session is like

Length: 30–120 min
  1. The first consultation is very thorough and often takes one to two hours.
  2. The therapist asks not only about your complaints but also about your sleep, preferences, feelings and circumstances.
  3. They then choose a remedy and explain how to take it.
  4. At shorter follow-up appointments you review how you are doing, and the remedy is adjusted if needed.

Homeopathy: what is it used for?

  • Allergies and hay fever.
  • Sleep problems.
  • Skin problems.

Many people also come because they want a long conversation and a holistic view. For none of these uses has an effect beyond placebo been shown.

How well is the effect supported?

Complaints for which this method is commonly used, sorted by the state of research. The rating shows how well the effect is supported, not whether it will help you.

What do the dots mean?
Established
recommended in guidelines, well studied
Some evidence
effect shown in studies, with limitations
Limited evidence
few or weak studies
Traditional use
used, but hardly studied

The rating covers the research, not the therapist.

Good to know

  • After the first consultation, follow-up appointments usually take place every few weeks.
  • Because of the high dilution, homeopathic remedies are considered well tolerated; the bigger risk is missing out on an effective treatment.
  • For new or severe symptoms, high fever, during pregnancy and for children, see a doctor first.
  • Homeopathy does not replace medical treatment; do not stop prescribed medication on your own.

Training and recognition in Switzerland

Classical homeopathy by doctors with an FMH certificate is covered by basic insurance. Non-medical therapists can obtain the federal diploma as a naturopath specialising in homeopathy; depending on your policy, supplementary insurance covers their treatments, usually only if they are registered with EMR or ASCA. Depending on the canton, a licence to practise is also required.
